Know What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Here are some steps to take for several common dental emergencies before you can get to our dental office. These actions will help ensure successful outcomes:
- Toothache – Rinse your mouth with warm water. Gently floss to remove any trapped food. Apply a cold compress to your cheek if there’s swelling.
- Loose Tooth – Don’t wiggle the tooth. Avoid biting on it. Use a cold compress if there’s pain or swelling.
- Broken Tooth – Use warm water to rinse your mouth and save any broken pieces to bring with you. Apply an ice pack or cold compress to reduce any swelling.
- Knocked-Out Tooth – Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently if dirty. Try to place it back in the socket, or keep it in milk or saliva while transporting to our office.
- Loose Filling or Crown – Keep the restoration if it falls out. Cover the affected tooth with dental cement from a drugstore if possible.
- Soft-Tissue Injury – Apply pressure with a clean piece of gauze or a moist tea bag to stop any bleeding. If the bleeding persists, go to the nearest emergency room.
