The possibilities seem endless during spring break. You have time to wind down and let loose after diligently working, enjoy relaxing with your friends and family, and most likely take a much-needed vacation.  If you have an upcoming out-of-town trip planned, consider doing some research about medical care—especially your dental care. Although it’s unlikely to happen, dental emergencies tend to take place when we least expect it. Your emergency dentist wants you to be prepared for when accidents happen whether you’re local in Jacksonville or abroad. Take a look at these tips and go into spring break with the knowledge and confidence to address any dental emergency.

Urgent Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies are considered to be anything that requires immediate attention. Some examples include severe toothaches, loose teeth, lost teeth, a soft tissue wound or injury, or abnormal bleeding. Of course, any kind of irregular pain around your face, neck, and mouth areas could also potentially be a dental emergency. In any of these scenarios we recommend that you come to our Jacksonville office to visit us:

  • Sudden swelling of your gums, cheeks, or any other areas of your mouth
  • Bleeding of the mouth
  • Large bulges along your gum line
  • Loose teeth
  • Knocked out teeth
  • Suddenly misaligned teeth
  • Lost dental restorations or prosthetics

Dental Emergencies While on Vacation

With any dental issue, whatever has gone wrong will get worse if you ignore the proper care needed to fix it. Infections can spread, last damage can occur, and the costs associated could increase if you wait to see a dentist. The Dental Center of Jacksonville would never suggest waiting to seek the proper dental care, even if you aren’t able to visit our office. Our top priority is making sure that our patients are taken care of. In an ideal situation, you would visit our office to make sure that you receive the best dental care available.
If you encounter an emergency that requires immediate health care—not specifically dental care—always go to the nearest emergency room! For instance, if you happen to get a deep laceration to your mouth that knocks out several of your natural teeth, please visit your nearest emergency doctor to address the deep laceration first. Once your priority health concerns have been addressed, reach out to either Dr. Natasha or Jignesh Patel to discuss your best restorative options.

How to Avoid Dental Emergencies

The Dental Center of Jacksonville will provide you important information before you leave town like which activities you should avoid. Chewing ice, chomping down on extremely hard foods, or indulging in sticky foods can damage your teeth or any dental restorations you may have. Before you go on a vacation, contact your dentist in Jacksonville for a general appointment. We can help you to prepare for any medical emergencies, deep clean your teeth, and address any dental health concerns you may have beforehand.  It is still possible to live carefreely and still take care of your teeth and gums responsibly. If you care for your teeth and gums now, they will take care of you for years to come!
