Jacksonville dental sedation

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is administered in the form of a pill; our team will provide you with a prescription and detailed instructions for when to take the medication prior to your appointment. Once the effects begin, patients should enter a deep state of calmness and comfort while still remaining conscious enough to respond to commands from our Jacksonville, FL doctors. In fact, some patients may not even remember much about their appointment once it’s completed – they’ll just see beautiful, revitalizing dental improvements in the mirror!

Patients undergoing oral conscious sedation will not be capable of safely driving once they’ve taken the sedative. For this reason, an escort will need to accompany you both to and from our office.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is commonly known as “laughing gas,” and it’s the perfect sedative for patients who struggle with mild dental anxiety and would like to feel more comfortable during their procedure. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask that fits over your nose, and within minutes of breathing it in, a relaxed and happy sensation should start to wash over you as our team members get to work.

Nitrous oxide is a safe sedative option for children and adults alike, and once the mask is removed, the effects wear off very quickly. This means that patients can return to work, attend school, and even drive themselves home with no downtime, which is great news for those with busy schedules.

Is Dental Sedation Safe?

Yes. Dental sedation uses medications that have been proven to be completely safe. Complications of any kind are extremely rare, and just about everyone is a good candidate for sedation dentistry at Dental Center Of Jacksonville.

To ensure your safety, your Jacksonville dentist will review your medical history and medications you’re taking, and meet with you to ensure that you’re a good candidate for sedation dentistry at our office.

During your appointment, we will use a carefully-calculated dose of sedative medication to make sure that you’re sedated safely. Our team will also keep a close eye on you and your vital signs. In the extraordinarily unlikely event that something doesn’t look quite right, we’ll be able to respond immediately to keep you safe.

How To Prepare For Dental Sedation At Our Office

If you’re getting nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas) at our office, you don’t need to do anything special before your appointment. The only thing we recommend is to avoid heavy meals for about two hours before your consultation. This reduces the risk of nausea, which can occur as a side effect of nitrous oxide.

If you’re getting pill-based oral conscious sedation, you may need to take a pill the night before your appointment, as well as another pill an hour or two before your appointment. You also may need to fast (avoid eating or drinking, except for water) for a certain period of time before your appointment. This helps ensure that the sedative enters your bloodstream properly.

Also, you will need a responsible adult to bring you to Dental Center of Jacksonville, since you will not be able to drive yourself to your appointment, or drive yourself back home. It takes a while for the side effects of oral conscious sedation to wear off, and it’s not safe to drive or operate heavy machinery for at least 4-6 hours after your treatment.

What To Expect After Dental Sedation

If you’re getting nitrous oxide sedation, Dr. Patel or Dr. Barbela will discontinue the flow of nitrous oxide when your appointment is almost over, and switch to a stream of pure oxygen. This helps “purge” any remaining nitrous oxide in your lungs and bloodstream. It only takes about five minutes for the effects to wear off.

After nitrous oxide sedation, you may feel a bit dizzy, nauseated, or fatigued. In some cases, you may also shiver or sweat excessively, but these symptoms will wear off very quickly.

If you’ve chosen oral conscious sedation, your symptoms will usually last for at least several hours after your treatment. You may feel sleepy, groggy, and confused for a while. Your motor skills and decision-making will also be impaired, which is why you can’t drive yourself home after your appointment at our office.

For most patients, these side effects will wear off within 4-6 hours. But in some cases, they can linger for up to 24 hours, so it may be a good idea to take a day off from work or school so that you can recover comfortably at home.
